Distance Learning Essentials
What You Need to Know Before Fall Semester Starts

Thursday August 17, 2006
Fall semester starts next month. If you're thinking about enrolling in an online program or taking a virtual class, here's what you need to know.

First, decide if distance learning is right for you. Learning online is flexible and convenient, but it takes a lot of dedication. Too many online learners enroll in a class, only to drop out when they realize they're not cut out for learning online. See: Is Distance Learning Right for You?

Second, choose the right program with the right accreditation. Make sure your online program will fit your personality and schedule. If you want your degree to be accepted in the workplace or at other universities, make sure your program is accredited by the proper regional organization. See: Choosing the School for You, Regional Accreditation

Third, learn how to be a successful student. Doing well in an online class can be different from doing well in a traditional course. Virtual schools require a lot more independent study and it's often difficult to tell what an instructor is looking for over the internet. See: How to Succeed as an Online Student

Good luck preparing for the upcoming semester of online classes. If you do it right, the benefits of learning online will definitely be worth it.
