O’Reilly School of Technology Launches
Monday April 16, 2007
Every computer geek works with a library of O’Reilly programming and technology books nearby. Now, students can benefit from the company’s expertise by enrolling in one of their new online classes and certificate programs. According to the O’Reilly School of Technology website (off-site link):
Initial reaction: Although the courses are a bit pricey ($298-$498), this looks like a good opportunity to learn from the truly tech-savvy. I'd suggest that interested students try out a course or two before committing to a certificate program.

The O’Reilly School of Technology sounded good to me, too. O’Reilly is the publisher of choice when it comes to technology books so I expected the latest in software development and programming.
Unfortunately, that’s not what I got. The books included with the courses were either discontinued or ancient, the technology taught was old – and I mean years out of date – and the instructors were unprepared.
Save your money and your time – these classes aren’t worth either one.
I second what Pat said. Horrible, horribly outdated and disappointing instruction.
Go to Lynda.com.
I beg to differ. I have just started O’Reilly intro to object orientated programming. I have never programmed before. Well, I have played with Ruby and Python but this is my first ever programming course. The tutorials are great! I struggled through the VTC tutorials; O’Reilly is much clearer! The tests are good too; you have to understand the stuff – parroting code won’t pass. So today I enrolled in the whole .NET certificate. It’s great fun!
