Beware of Fake Online High Schools

Tuesday October 7, 2008
This month I've received several emails from readers concerned about choosing an online high school. Be aware: there are scams out there. Some so-called schools make big promises, offering to award a diploma for little effort and a lot of money.

So, how do you choose a legitimate program? Check the school's accreditation. Programs with regional accreditation are the most accepted by colleges and employers. Programs with DETC accreditation (also known as national accreditation) are also accepted by many.

You may also want to ask each potential school questions about their class offerings, teacher qualifications, and extracurricular offerings.
