College Interns to Teach Online Secondary Students

Thursday January 15, 2009
Student teaching is entering the virtual realm with a new program that allows student interns from the University of Central Florida to teach online classes from Florida Virtual School.

The University of Central Florida Newsroom reports:
"Six UCF education majors will be immersed in the virtual school environment and gain experience teaching online. During the internship, they will work closely with FLVS teachers, providing direct instruction via webinars and meeting with middle- or high-school students and their families via conference calls. The interns also will interact with other online teachers and teaching teams at FLVS and grade student work."
The program seems like a smart way to give potential teachers hands-on experience with online classrooms. Even seasoned instructors can flounder when directing a virtual course, which is often an extremely different experience from what they've come to know.

The interns will also complete several weeks of student teaching at a regular campus.
