Thought you might want to know…University of Phoenix actually has the HIGHEST graduation rate of any non-traditional school. The classes are structured in sucha wya that those of us who could not possibly drop everything and go several days a week to a traditional college or university, only to graduate in the average 5-6 yrs that it is for those who attend these schools. The average University of Phoenix student is between 25 and 45, married with kids or single parent, working at least full time, and still managing to attend college classes full time, all while being able to graduate in 4 years or less. It would behoove you to find out a little about a school before you write about it in order to have all the facts straight. =0)
Thanks for your comment. Just for the record, I want to make it clear that I stand by my post. The University of Phoenix does not have the “highest graduation rate of any non-traditional school.” It’s rate is pretty much on the bottom of the list, exceeded by schools such as American InterContinental University, Devry University, Western Governors University, and ITT Technical Institute.
That’s just a statistical fact. It doesn’t mean that graduates haven’t worked hard, despite their busy lives.
You are both right. University of Phoenix does have one of the lowest graduation rates acccording to the federal standard. However, the federal standard only takes into account students with no prior college experience when determining graduation rates. This is a little bias to the University of Phoenix considering that the university caters to 25-45 year olds that more than likely have had some college experience. The graduation rate is slightly above average when these students are taken into account.
I found it so interesting and suspicous that acccording to the federal standard only first time students are taken into account, when I know for a fact that a large majority of UOP’s students have are professionals with prior college experience. In addition, students range in age much higher than mentioned. As a student of UOP, I am a degreed professional, 57yrs. old with prior college experience. Attending UOP allows me time as a fulltime working professional to continue my education without having to spend an enormous amount of time commuting between work, school, and home.
Tammy Oseid is grossly incomplete in reporting the decision of the federal jury against Univ. of Phoenix. U.S. District Judge James Teilborg subsequently overturned the verdict, ruling that the evidence was insufficient. Also, Univ. of Phoenix never saught AACSB accreditation. Yet, Univ. of Phoenix’s MBA programs in particular are pragmatically accredted by ACBSP, CHEA recognized like AACSB.
Will credits transfer? Can I get a good job with a UoP degree? It’s very expensive & I don’t want to waste money.
If you would like some information about the school just call 602-713-8216 and they can more than answer all questions about their graduation rates and how they can help you get back into class.
The Graduation Rate is calculated using data from first time students who finish their bachelors degree within 6 years. This is a very small percentage of students seeing that most UOP students already have prior college and most have not been in shool for over 6 years. For those who do start new with UOP as new students many finish their associates and end up attending elsewhere for their bachelors. If the School calculated their graduation rate taking into account all students then their graduation rate actually sits at about 59% a little above the national average. Not bad for a school built on helping students who are not in the position to attend a traditional University. Sounds like they actually are helping students “become Phoenix’s”.
AACSB is the gold standard of business accreditation; don’t kid yourself that there’s no difference. The University of Phoenix hasn’t applied because they likely wouldn’t get it. I don’t think that particular issue has much to do with their graduation rates; it’s more of an issue of the faculty being part-time, the high-turnover rate, quality of instruction, etc.
The “Graduation Rate” is a standard used by all colleges to determine a standard, comparable graduation rate. It uses data from first time students, because older, more experienced students have different “rates” of their own, and may skew a particular school. To compare “apples with apples”, if you use the official “graduation rate” for UOP, it is definitely on the bottom. If you take any school and consider only the older, more experienced students and business professionals, you’ll get a higher rate of graduation. If you compare oranges with oranges, and compare UOP’s older students with other online university’s older students, you’ll still get a low graduation rate. One reason may be that their tuition at UOP exceeds the amount of standard financial aid packages, making it very difficult for people in this economy to afford. They are higher than other “comparable” online universities, without getting any better of an education. The staff continually point out that they are a “for profit” university, and some of the tuition goes into the shareholder’s pockets. Nice.
I do not attend UoP. I attend another online university “accredited.” Online education is a self discipline. Students that graduate from an accredited online university have achieved a great thing. I did not look at the graduation rate before I started, because it meant nothing to me. If I did the math right, UoP graduates about 70-80,000 students a year. What brick and mortar school does that? We only get out of our education what we put in it.
Yesterday, I submitted my dissertation to the dean for approval. I have mixed feelings about the perceptions of the UOP doctorate online. The assignments were rigorous and the professors were top of the line. My writing improved 300%. I do not feel cheated because the knowledge that I have attained is priceless. I did have a few problems but my academic counselor was very helpful. I had the same academic advisor for five years and only two financial advisors. My academic reviewer quit before the second review of my dissertation. I believe in Murphy’s law, “what can go wrong, will go wrong.” All institutions have issues but UOP is very proactive with working out the kinks. I can not control the perceptions that people have about UOP but I am satisfied with the education. You get what you put in.
Hey guys, I am having trouble finding graduation rates for non traditional school. Whats grad rate for undergrad at Phoenix?
I’m a current student and I choose the University of Phoenix to complete my education after leaving a degree half-way done from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. Comparing the two, I have to say that the University of Phoenix has a better program (more difficult also) than the well-established OLLU. I have high grades on both, but the quality of the learning at U of P is superior in any way to most traditional institutions. U of P bases grades on writing papers (strictly graded, APA style, the whole 9 yards
) and the application of the learned materials. The only issue I have is that you are forced to work in teams (30% of the grade) which is really difficult online. As far as the graduation rate, who knows, I did have some college so I’m not included in the statistics. As far as learning, no doubt! I’m a Phoenix!
The university of phoenix’s graduation rate is the lowest out of all other schools of its type. Their graduation rate is only 15% while other schools just like it are getting 35% and higher.
