Online 2-Year School Guarantees University Acceptance

Students earning an associates degree through Tiffin University's new Ivy Bridge College are guaranteed acceptance to one of several universities.

Diverse Education reports:
"Entering a four-year university just got more attainable, thanks to a new approach to online learning at Tiffin University. Administrators and professors at the Ohio-based university are taking the concept of online education to a new level: creating Ivy Bridge College, which offers an associate degree for general studies and guarantee admission to select four-year institutions for successful students...

“Obviously there are a lot of associate degrees that are career oriented,” says Dr. Paul Marion, president of Tiffin University. “But there are not that many associate degrees in general studies. So we did some market research and found that there are a number of people around the country who did indicate an interest of an online format for their first few years of college.”
The accelerated associates program takes only 20 months. Afterwards, graduates are awarded a Tiffin University diploma and are guaranteed admission to dozens of schools around the nation such as Golden Gate University and Concord University.

Come on Jamie. This is absurd. Any JC with an online program can guarantee the same transfer program if they have an articulation agreement in place whether it is one or a dozen four year schools. This is not spectacular, is not life altering, and certainly is not new. This disinformation preys on the misdirected fear and nonsense that an online education is somehow less than a degree that comes from sitting in a classroom. Nothing could be further from the truth. A piece of unsolicited advice for your readers – Call or email the school you may want to eventually transfer into before you even undertake one course in any two year college, whether they teach online or require you to sit in a classroom, to ASSURE that your credits are transferable. It is better to be safe than sorry since schools, even those with articulation agreements, may have some hurdles for you to hop over before you can enter that four year university as they may even require you to repeat a course.

Please, let’s not have your readers fall for this puff shell game.

Thanks for your comments, Fred. While I agree that many junior colleges have articulation agreements with universities, I do think it’s notable that this online program is trying to do it on a national scale. Brick-and-mortar schools with online 2-year programs tend to have agreements only with local universities or universities within their state.

I don’t think anyone is saying that Tiffin’s program is “life altering.” But, many students feel more comfortable when they know these types of agreements are in place. Do you think it would be a mistake if this caught on and other national, online junior colleges started creating agreements?
