Schools Consider Distance Learning Alternatives to Prepare for Swine Flu Pandemic

Many traditional schools are considering online learning alternatives as a backup in case Swine Flu outbreaks necessitate campus closures.

Education Week reports:
"Nearly 300 schools around the country had closed as of April 30 as a result of the flu, according to the Associated Press...

'Schools at all levels should be using this time to prepare for a possible swine flu pandemic, with online instruction being an important option to consider,' Thomas E. Chandler, the manager of technology and educational applications for the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, said in an e-mail. 'And if swine flu does not materialize as a major pandemic, having an online distance-learning plan in place will always be useful, in the event of the next [crisis]."
Although it may take some time for less-experienced schools to create workable online learning systems, virtual courses could allow students to continue their studies unhindered. Schools wouldn't need to worry about scheduling make up days or altering their academic calendars. As is emphasized above, once in place, online learning systems could be used during other instances of disruption such as snow-ins, storms, or campus repairs.
