Recently, several studies have shown that online learning is as effective (or more effective) than traditional courses. But, not everyone is convinced. College professors continue to believe that instruction in brick-and-mortar classrooms is superior to virtual coursework.
The Chronicle of Higher Education reports:
"...A study from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities shows that 70 percent of the 10,000 faculty members surveyed believe that online courses are either 'inferior' or 'somewhat inferior' to traditional ones. Professors who have taught online are more positive about the approach, but 48 percent of them are likewise convinced that online courses are not as good as face-to-face teaching."
The good news: fewer than half of professors with personal experience thought that online learning was inferior. As more teachers have the opportunity to teach online and the overall quality of virtual learning improves, professors are likely to develop a more positive view of virtual learning.
