Capella University Online Academics:

More than 20,000 students in all 50 states and 56 other countries attended Capella University in 2007, making this for-profit company one of the largest online campuses. Founded in 1993, Capella University currently employs more than 1,000 faculty and 1,090 administrative staff, and is now publicly traded. Students considering Capella may enroll in a free one-week online course to learn more about Capella's programs and technology.

Capella University Online Accreditation:

The North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission accredits Capella University.

Capella University Online Degrees and Programs:

Prospective students can select from more than 100 graduate and undergraduate programs. From its bachelor's degrees to doctoral programs, the university emphasizes the business, education, health-care, information-technology, psychology and public-safety fields. About 45% of students are working toward doctorates, 40% toward master's degrees and 15%toward bachelor's. Fewer than 1% are enrolled in 15 certificate programs.

Capella University Online Admissions:

Online applications are not currently available, and students must call an enrollment counselor to apply. Undergraduates are required to submit a high school transcript and international students must send TOEFL scores, but according to the National Center for Education Statistics, 100% of fall 2006 undergraduate applicants were enrolled. US students pay a $75 application fee; international students a $175 fee. Transfer credits may be accepted.

Capella University Online Costs:

Undergraduate students pay $300 per credit, for a total $54,000 for the 180-credit program. Students also may earn credits for skills gained through work or other self-instruction at a fee of $450 per course for faculty skill assessment. MBA students pay about $600 per credit for a total $28,800. Doctoral, education-specialist and some certificate candidates pay $4,176 quarterly. Other master's and certificate candidates pay per-credit tuition ranging from $359 to $515. About 78% of students receive some financial aid. Military personnel, employees of more than 100 corporations, and students at one in four community colleges may be eligible for reduced tuition.

Interesting Facts:

Capella University holds two graduation ceremonies annually: one at its Minneapolis headquarters and another at a traveling US location.

Capella University sponsors a Minnesota K-12 charter school, East Range Academy of Technology and Science, which opened in fall 2007.
