Eastern Kentucky University Online Academics:
Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the master's program in homeland security has become a cornerstone of Eastern Kentucky University's online curriculum. Overall, the distance education branch serves more than 10,000 students. Eastern Kentucky University touts the flexibility of its Web-based offerings, but cautions that classes that demand real-time participation require that students log in at specified times. In addition, classes must be completed within a designated semester. Enrollment is offered six times a year. Eastern Kentucky University virtual students get their assignments weekly and still study in part from physical textbooks. The school says it has a 17-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Eastern Kentucky University Online Degrees and Programs:
The programs revolve around criminal justice and public and worker safety. The degrees are the same as those earned on campus. The school offers a Master of Science in safety, security and emergency management in three different areas of concentration: fire and emergency services, occupational safety, and homeland security. The latter sets a foundation for work with the DEA, FBI, Secret Service, Air Marshal program, and other agencies. Certificates are also available for the same master's programs, except multidisciplinary. Undergrads can earn a Bachelor of Science in correctional and juvenile justice or fire and safety engineering.
Eastern Kentucky University Online Admissions:
Master's candidates must have an undergraduate degree, a 3.0 grade point average in the last 60 units of their bachelor's schooling, GRE scores of 425 on both the verbal and quantitative, plus an analytical writing score of 3.0. A 375 score on the MAT is also sufficient. Also needed are three letters of recommendation. Foreign students are required to score 550 on TOEFL. Bachelor's candidates need a high school degree or a GED, or have completed an Eastern Kentucky University-approved home-school or distance-learning program. An ACT score of 18 (or a comparable SAT score) is the accepted minimum. Transfer students must have earned a 2.0 GPA in previous college work and have left their previous institution in good standing.
Eastern Kentucky University Online Costs:
Tuition for the master's programs runs $500 per credit hour. The cost is $350 per credit hour for the bachelor's programs. Both rates rank very low among schools in the region, the school says. Students are responsible for meeting payment responsibilities even if they do not get a statement.
