Franklin University Online Academics:

A quarter of a recent Franklin University graduating class did coursework online, reflecting the school's commitment to distance learning. Franklin has a full catalog of undergraduate majors in practical disciplines such as business and computers, plus a master's business track. Classes are offered from 15 weeks in duration down to a speedy three weeks. Some courses require online presence at an enforced time, but most of the work can be completed at any juncture before the deadline. Franklin University's virtual campus remains open at all hours. The school touts its average class size of 18 students in promising an "optimal learning environment." Franklin's online tuition ranks among the nation's lowest 10% for bachelor's programs, according to the school. Perhaps that's one of the reasons it teaches more than 10,000 students a year, many from other colleges previously: Nearly three-fourths of Franklin undergraduates are transfers. The school also reaches out to the military as part of GoArmyEd, which can cover the total tuition for qualified soldiers.

Franklin University Online Accreditation:

Franklin University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Franklin University Online Degrees and Programs:

Franklin University Online is to introduce two new bachelor's tracks -- operations and supply chain management and public relations -- in winter 2009. It also has Bachelor of Science programs in accounting, digital communication, healthcare management, and IT, among others. Students can choose to stop at a two-year associate degree in most programs. A master's in business administration is also available.

Franklin University Online Admissions:

Undergraduate applicants must have a high school degree or a passing grade on the GED and the transcripts or official report to back it up. Transfers will need to send their transcripts (from an accredited institution) to Franklin. Requirements for master's candidates include at least a 2.75 undergraduate GPA and a bachelor's degree. Work experience in a chosen field is also part of the deal. Foreign students will need to satisfactorily complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (550 paper score, 213 computer, 79-80 Internet score) and be evaluated by the university if necessary.

Franklin University Online Costs:

Franklin's "standard" credit hour for undergraduate studies costs $280, but varies depending on the undergraduate major. Soldiers in the U.S. Army (GoArmyEd) pay $250, which is often completely subsidized. The tuition for a master's in business administration or a master's in marketing and communication is $450 per credit hour; a master's in computer science is $530 per credit hour. Fees apply. The school encourages applicants to inquire about financial aid. Seventy-five percent of the student body receives some type of assistance.

Interesting Fact:

Franklin University's online undergrad enrollees range from 18 to 71 years old, with an average age of 32.
