Mountain State University Online Academics:

Mountain State University embraces an accelerated online education program, guiding students through back-to-back eight-week classes in a 16-week semester. The university's Blackboard CE and WebCT virtual classrooms are equipped with everything students need: instructor access, assignments, a discussion room and a schedule of due dates. The courses are aimed mostly at working adults. Seventy-eight percent of the classes have fewer than 20 students. The school also offers a more leisurely paced independent study as part of its distance-learning curriculum. Participants can take up to four months to complete a course. They can even send completed work through the mail if necessary. Cohort learning brings together students to complete coursework in the same community, but students should check geographic limitations.

Mountain State's programs weigh heavily toward the career-oriented, with an associate-to-bachelor's degree ladder built into many of the majors. Mountain State University augments its undergrad repertoire with an 18-month Bachelor of Science completion program. For adults new to higher education, the school's Spectrum track is the first step toward a degree. Although one of the school's missions is to serve students already in the workforce, 73% of Mountain State's student body attends full-time. Students should doublecheck for any attendance requirements for in-person cohort learning or clinical rounds where they apply.

Mountain State University Online Accreditation:

Mountain State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Mountain State University Online Degrees and Programs:

Career-primed learning fuels the school's associate and bachelor's curriculum online, from accounting, computer science, criminal justice (includes a homeland security emphasis) and diagnostic medical sonography (includes clinical practice and geographic limitations) to business administration tracks in human resource management, management, hospitality, finance, marketing and healthcare management. A master's degree in strategic leadership is also offered online.

Mountain State University Online Admissions:

The basics for admission into Mountain State University include a high school diploma or GED certificate. Transfers will need transcripts from each previous school. Foreign applicants should contact the university's international coordinator. Degree candidates should have at least 40 legitimate transfer credits, two years of work experience and at least a 2.0 GPA in undergrad schooling. Master's applicants need a bachelor's degree.

Mountain State University Costs:

Undergraduate online tuition generally ranges between $300 and $420 per credit hour, and $345 per credit hour for a master's pursuit. Fees apply. Financial aid is available for both civilians and military personnel.

Interesting Fact:

The university, formerly Beckley College, was founded in 1933 as an answer to the Great Depression. Local, affordable education was needed for youths who were cut off from major universities by poorly kept mountain roads.
