University of Cincinnati Online Academics:
The University of Cincinnati devised its menu of distance-learning options primarily from health care, education and criminal justice. In keeping with its distance-learning roots, begun in 1984, Cincinnati continues to offer fire science programs as well. Students are eligible for degrees and certificates, or they can just take a class for its own merit. Most class discussions are conducted through message boards, but some may require same-time participation. Through the university's Blackboard system, students read lectures and required texts, do their homework and take exams. It is recommended that students check in at least every other day. They have all hours to do it. For the few online courses that might entail on-campus visits, that information is posted in the class schedule before the sign-up. The distance-learning branch operates on the quarter system. Students' grades appear on their transcripts at the end of each quarter.
