Winston-Salem State University Online Academics:

Winston-Salem State University often blends distance learning with other modes of course delivery. However, transfers from within the state of North Carolina can finish a multipurpose bachelor's degree completely online. Online master's degrees are available in health care -- some with clinical obligations. Graduate school attendees should keep their grade point average at 3.0 or above to remain in good standing. The school says it presents distance-education courses as an alternative for "place or time bound" North Carolinians who "cannot take advantage of on-campus offerings." Distance-learning methods include the Internet, video tape and cable TV. Winston-Salem, which operates on a semester system, promises full faculty availability for those taking classes away from campus. Sixty-eight percent of a recent group of applicants gained entry into the university.

Winston-Salem State University Online Degrees and Programs:

Winston-Salem State University's distance-learning arm offers a Bachelor of Science in clinical laboratory science, a post-bachelor categorical certificate in clinical laboratory science, and a bachelor's of interdisciplinary studies. The latter is a general degree available for those who already have an associate degree and can transfer a considerable amount of approved credits to Winston-Salem. It takes 36 semester credit hours to finish the degree. The school aims the program at older adults already in the workforce. The post-bachelor categorical certificate in clinical laboratory science can be completed online, but participants must be affiliated with an approved laboratory and choose between the concentrations of chemistry, hematology, immunohematology or microbiology. A master's degree in rehabilitation counseling qualifies graduates for caregiving positions with the physically and mentally disabled. Those students will need to complete a practicum and on-site internship.

Winston-Salem State University Online Admissions:

Transfers for the bachelor's completion must have transcripts submitted from each previous place of higher education. Advanced placement tests can also transfer for credit. Life experience does not translate into preliminary credit. Requirements for master's candidates include GRE results within the last five years and college transcripts showing a minimum 2.7 undergraduate grade point average, plus three letters of recommendation. Applicants will also have to interview with faculty. International students from non-English speaking countries will need to prove their fluency.

Winston-Salem State University Online Costs:

Undergraduate in-state tuition costs around $1,900 per year for full-time; in-state graduate tuition is about $2,100 per year full-time. The web-based programs are aimed primarily at residents of North Carolina.
