Q:
Im a little low on money lately and have been thinking about taking a semester of online classes instead of paying for traditional school. How much money can I save by going to school through the net?
Thanks,
Ricky
A:
Dear Ricky,
Distance learning classes can be just as expensive as regular classes. In fact, some distance learning programs even cost more! However, you may be able to save money by shopping around for a school that fits your needs, financial and otherwise.
The great thing about distance learning programs is that you can choose one from anywhere in the nation, without worrying about location. So, while you may be able to find a traditional school thats just as cheap, youd be less likely to find one thats just as cheap and close to home.
When selecting your school, make sure that you consider quality. If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Without the proper accreditation, you may not be able to transfer classes to other schools, which renders your cheap credits worthless.
One more thing to consider. Although the price for distance classes is comparable to the price for traditional classes, online learning does let students save in other ways. Most distance learners get to save on childcare, transportation, and parking fees. You may want to try totaling these expenses with our cost comparison chart. Also, be sure to save in general ways. Watch for student discounts and tax credits that can shave thousands from your costs.
Happy Savings,
Jamie Littlefield
