What You Need to Know About Online Degree Programs

How to Choose & Where to Find Online Degree Programs

By Jamie Littlefield, About.com

Online degree programs have grown in number and reputation. Today, you can choose from thousands of accredited online degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Although students should beware of diploma mills, legitimate online degree programs exist for almost every field of study.

The Basics of Online Degree Programs

Online degree programs allow college students to study from home, sometimes without ever setting foot on a traditional campus. While online degree programs vary, many allow students to work at their own pace and at their own time. Due to this flexibility, online degree programs have become popular with working professionals, parents, and members of the military.

How to Compare an Online Degree Programs

When looking for an online degree program, there are several factors to consider. All students should be concerned with the school’s accreditation and be sure that the school they select has a positive reputation. You should also consider your personal learning preferences. Narrow your choices to online degree programs that will fit your schedule, your need for teacher/student interaction, and your preferred type of studying (group work, self-paced, etc).

Accreditation of Online Degree Programs

There are two types of acceptable accreditation for online degree programs: regional accreditation and DETC accreditation. Both forms are recognized by the United States Department of Education. Regional education is the most widely-accepted type of accreditation and is sought by most traditional colleges. Online degree programs with DETC (or national) accreditation are also respected by many schools and employers.

Avoiding Rip-Off Online Degree Programs

While accreditation is the most important factor, watch for additional warning signs. Only consider online degree programs that have received positive feedback from former students and have shown a history of stability. Do not consider online degree programs that make outrageous promises such as mailing you a degree based completely on life experience or after only a week of work.

Find Online Degree Programs

By browsing the impartial profiles of degree programs on this site, you should be able to find a school that fits your needs. Should you study reviews of online degree programs at any website, make sure that the reviewer is objective. Many websites now allow online degree programs to submit their own reviews or are paid directly for positive reviews.
