Is an online degree the same as a traditional degree?

By Jamie Littlefield, About.com

Question: Is an online degree the same as a traditional degree?

Answer: Some online diplomas will be viewed as equal to diplomas from traditional schools, others will be considered greatly inferior. It all depends on what kind of online school you go to. An online program that is run through a traditional, regionally accredited school is the best bet. If you enroll in a school like this, chances are your diploma will be the exactly the same as those of students who attended classes on the physical campus. If you choose a school that is only online, make sure that it is accredited by the proper regional association. Degrees from schools that are not accredited, or are accredited by an organization that isn't one of the six regional agencies, will probably not be viewed as legitimate by other schools and employers. If you want to use your diploma for furthering your education or advancing in your career, check to make sure it will be accepted by others.
