What is the University of the People?:

The University of the People is a free online college that was founded in 2009 as a revolutionary approach designed to break through the traditional barriers of higher education. As this college is the first of its kind, many schools and scholars are watching carefully to see if free higher education programs can actually succeed. University of the People students can work towards one of four degrees.

Does the University of the People Offer Degrees?:

Yes. The University of the People offers undergraduate bachelors and associates degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration. However, because the school is so new, it is not yet licensed. Degrees may not be awarded if it does not receive state licensing. This is a major risk for incoming students. However, many students have decided that the risk is worth the benefit of free classes and the opportunity to be a part of something different.

Is the University of the People Accredited?:

No. According to their website, the University of the People plans to seek accreditation in the future. Students that graduate before accreditation is granted will receive degrees from a non-accredited school, which may not be acceptable to some universities and employers.

How does the University of the People Offer Free Online Degrees?:

While the University of the People does have instructors, these qualified volunteers do not carry the same burden as traditional classroom teachers. The University of the People uses what they call the "peer-based learning methodology." Their online students spend a lot of their time working with each other and answering questions for their peers. Additionally, University of the People courses use open-source curriculum that is available to the public at no cost.

Is The University of the People a Scam?:

No. The University of the People isn't accredited, but that doesn't mean that it is a scam. Many organizations have applauded the school for its insight and courage to try a creative approach to the issue of higher education costs.
