How do I know if an online school is accredited?

By Jamie Littlefield, About.com

Question: How do I know if an online school is accredited?
Answer: Don't automatically believe a school is accredited just because they tell you so. Many "diploma mill" schools lie or even make up their own fake accrediting agencies. Your school should be accredited by the regional agency in your area. You can check with one of the four regional accrediting agencies to see if your school is accredited.
