Top Five English Resources

By Jamie Littlefield, About.com

If you’re studying for a literature exam or are struggling to get your thoughts down on paper, these English and Language Arts links can make a difference on your grade. From book notes to entire texts online, each site offers something unique to help with your studies.

Spark Notes This site gets a bad rap since students often use it as a way to avoid actually reading the novels assigned to them; but, even if you study your assigned readings meticulously, it can still help you gain a new perspective or two. If you’ve ever struggled to understand a book, or would just like a little extra insight, Spark Notes is for you. Type in the name of your book, and you’ll find book guides, summaries, lists of characters, a review of the themes, review questions, and more.

Internet Library The Internet Public Library has a huge collection of literary criticism, searchable by time period and author.

Library Spot This amazing gateway contains some of the best links to the library reference materials you need.

Bartleby Books Bartleby offers a huge collection of books, all available online and all for free. Offers a brief biography for each author and a number of other services including lists of quotes and a thesaurus. Books are viewable online and are also downloadable.

Resources for Writers The Online Resources for Writers page lists dozens of links that can help you with any of your writing concerns. From proper grammar to essay format, check this site before you turn in a paper.
