If you’re an online student, you may qualify for a federal grant to pay for college tuition and expenses. Federal grants are available to students that meet funding guidelines and are enrolled in accredited programs. Here are 5 federal grant programs to consider.

The Pell Grant is the most common type of federal student grant. Students are awarded Pell Grants based on financial need – those with family incomes below $20,000 are most likely to qualify.

2. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

If you still can’t afford college with a Pell Grant, you may be able to receive a supplemental grant. These federal grants are given to the neediest undergraduate students and recipients are selected by each college’s financial aid office.

3. Academic Competitiveness Grant

Freshmen and sophomore students with a history of academic achievement may qualify for additional grant money. The Academic Competitiveness Grant requires the completion of a rigorous high school program and a 3.0 college GPA.

4. National SMART Grant

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant is another smart way to supplement the Pell Grant. This program awards up to $4,000 to students in their last two years of undergraduate study who show promise in the field of technology, math, physical and life sciences, engineering, or foreign language.

5. Federal TEACH Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant offers up o $4,000 a year for students studying education. Recipients must score in the 75th percentile on a college admissions exam or keep a GPA above 3.24. They must also agree to teach in a high-need field at a low-income school for at least four years.
