Guide Review - Book Review - How to be a Successful Online Student
“Distance learner” does not equal “unintelligent.” Unfortunately, that’s what the author of How to be a Successful Online Student seems to imply. In 266 pages, she says what could easily be explained in less than 20. Be prepared for “cute” lines such as: “Okay, so you’re set - shine on your virtual shoes, virtual hair slicked back - the ideal virtual student. Now that you’re officially a student, you’ll have official schoolwork.” Ugh. That said, none of her information is off, and very hesitant distance learners may appreciate the unthreatening tone and pace of the book. There are some “gems” of information for experienced students patient enough to find them. One section, for example, gives helpful information about your recourse options should find yourself in a particularly poor distance learning program. Another does a fine job of explaining what to look for in potential schools and teachers. If you need a step-by-step guide, this book may be a good choice.
