What Classes / Programs Does Your High School Offer?
Allied National High School offers college preparatory and general diploma pathways. Seniors may also participate in our dual enrollment program to earn credit towards college and / or a vocational certificate.
Why Do Families Choose Your Online High School?
Families choose Allied National High School because we are a regionally and nationally accredited online high school with open enrollment and flexible scheduling. The NCAA also approves Allied National High School core courses.
What Kind of Technology Do Your Students Use?
ANHS students use Blackboard to access their interactive online lessons. Within Blackboard, students interact with their instructors using a virtual whiteboard and discussion boards. Students use a 24-hour voice-mail system to leave messages for their instructors and submit oral presentations.
What is a Typical School Day Like for Your Students?
Many of our students choose to complete one lesson per day in one of their courses. Each lesson takes approximately five hours to complete and is equivalent to a week’s worth of work in the traditional classroom. The student reads the online lesson in Blackboard, reads the chapter in the textbook, completes the check your understanding exercises, completes the discussion board activity, completes the assignment and turns it in for grading and feedback and then takes the quiz. For science courses, students also complete a wet lab experiment and write a lab report.
What is the Biggest Challenge Your Students Face?
Learning in an online environment is not ideal for all learners, but many students find that there are advantages to the traditional classroom in the online setting. Therefore, there is a challenge in determining if learning online is the ideal environment for a particular student. This can be determined by evaluating the student’s comfort level with technology, if they enjoy learning with the use of visual aids, and if they have the self-discipline and support required to manage their schedule. There are few challenges related to the actual learning experience once it is determined that a student will benefit in an online setting,. Sometimes students find it challenging to adapt to learning at their own pace, which requires more responsibility to complete their work on time. If this occurs, the student may have trouble meeting the deadline date for course completion. We do offer a courtesy extension free of charge for those that request the extension before the deadline date. This extension gives students the time and support needed to adjust to their new environment. Almost all students do adapt and learn to manage their time and academic responsibilities successfully while attending our program. The benefit of overcoming this challenge is strengthened time management skills that help students succeed in college and their careers.
Advice
- Students that learn online should discuss academic goals with their families and schedule study time in advance. Family members will need to encourage students to stay on schedule and follow up with the school regularly. Students should keep a visual reminder of their learning goals for the week. It is important to remember to ask instructors for help. ANHS students can email, call, or meet their teachers in the help center when they need assistance. Online students should also have a quiet place to work, a comfortable chair, and necessary school supplies in the area where they plan to study and learn online.
